Third try failed at grub install?

Well, on the third install it failed at grub install I think.
Just a simple message saying that it failed nothing more.
When I tried to reboot, found my grub booted but nothing more.
Had to boot a rescue CD and reinstall grub on MBR.

Very flaky install procedure. I'm very unhappy. Dosen't anyone test
this stuff??
